Patient J.G.

Condition Treated: Long-Covid Symptoms: moderate to extreme fatigue, headaches, brain fog/memory issues, complete loss of taste, and unwarranted sweating.
and Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction: depression, anxiety, nervousness, fearfulness, difficulty sleeping, teeth clenching, and digestive issues.

Patient is a 62-year-old female with long-standing moderate to severe Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction as well as long Covid symptoms.

This patient relayed a long history of struggling with nervousness, anxiety, and depression. She described her nervousness as “OCPD – over-thinking things” that would cause her mind to race. She described herself as “very serious” and not light hearted and that she was very restless with an inability to sit still for very long. She described feeling very down and hopeless for the last several years. She also described an OCD-type tendency with exercise in which she would push herself to the point of exhaustion and collapse. She described a feeling of heaviness that was “like a burden,” both physical and emotionally.

Other ANS dysfunction symptoms this patient complained about were a difficulty in making decisions, frustration, and fearfulness. She also had complaints of cold hands and feet, clenching her teeth as well as grinding her teeth.

This patient was also struggling with long-Covid symptoms after contracting the Covid-19 virus in April of 2022. These symptoms consisted of moderate to extreme fatigue, headaches, brain fog/memory issues, unwarranted sweating within 10 minutes of walking or hiking and a complete loss of her sense of taste.

An additional symptom that this patient struggled with that worsened after having had Covid was sleep disturbance. She reported having “sleeplessness” since undergoing menopause with fitful sleep and lack of deep sleep/lack of dreaming. But after having Covid, she reported suffering from “insomnia” in which she was unable to fall asleep at all for about two hours and would then wake up every 1.5 to 2 hours during the night.

She also reported having digestive issues with alternating periods of constipation and then diarrhea/loss stools. She had also lost her appetite most of the time.

Treatment: This patient underwent 13 weeks of LILT applied to her cervical spine, cervical vagus nerve branches as well as transcranially utilizing the Bioflex Low Intensity Laser Therapy System. Treatment was initially performed at 3x/week for the first 7 weeks and then reduced to 2x/week. She then received monthly booster treatments for an additional three months.

Outcomes: This patient made significant improvement with all her reported symptoms, both with her long-Covid as well as her chronic ANS dysfunction symptoms. She reported that she feels overall 85% improved.
She reported that her fatigue is much improved from a 7-8/10 to a 1/10 currently. Her headaches have reduced from a reported 7/10 to a 0/10/non-existent. Her unwarranted sweating that she had rated as a 9/10 is completely resolved. Her sense of taste is much improved. And her difficulty sleeping is dramatically improved such that she has no difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep most nights and is dreaming again, therefore reaching a deeper state of sleep that is critical for cellular functioning and brain health.
Her digestive issues have largely resolved, and her appetite has been restored to normal levels.
Her mood disorder is greatly improved. She reports being much calmer and that her thoughts are not as intense anymore. She states her depression no longer takes over her and she feels more lighthearted. She states she is also less fearful and is now planning a camping trip alone with her trailer and she does not think she would have done that a year ago. She states she now has a “sense of embracing rather that a sense of fear and that this is very empowering.”
She also reports she is no longer clenching or grinding her teeth. She states her cold hands and feet are also improved. And she feels like her general arthritis pain is much better as well.
Conclusion: Low Intensity Light/Laser Therapy can be a good and safe course of treatment to help resolve many of the long Covid symptoms, as research is showing that long Covid may be a result of damage to the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) as well as to the endocrine system caused by the Covid-19 virus. By treating the ANS and the endocrine system with LILT, we are helping restore homeostasis to both systems and therefore reduce or eliminating the many symptoms that people experience with ANS dysfunction.
LILT helps improve mitochondrial health and function and increases DNA protein synthesis, allowing the body to create new healthy cells and increases the formation of new neural networks or neurogenesis. It also boosts the microglial cells in the brain and the macrophages of the white blood cells to enable increased removal of waste products and debris or scar tissue. It helps improve overall cellular health and functioning and reduces inflammation.
